MGTL | Green Glossary Archival: Acid-free (alkaline pH) sheets are used for projects requiring longevity as they offer the best protection against discoloration or deterioration over time. Papers made from 100% cotton contain low acidity and are frequently used for archival purposes. Carbon Footprint: This is the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service. ECF (Elemental Chlorine-Free): Paper fiber that has been bleached with alternative chlorine compounds as a substitute for elemental chlorine, which is harmful to the environment. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): The FSC recognizes products that meet rigorous standards for responsible management of forest resources. It is the global benchmark for responsible forest management. Green Sealâ„¢: A non-profit organization working to achieve a healthier, cleaner environment by promoting environmentally responsible products and services. PCF (Processed Chlorine-Free): Paper that is made from fiber recycled from post-consumer waste (PCW) and unbleached or bleached without chlorine compounds. PCF paper is the most environmentally friendly type. PCW (Post-Consumer Waste): Paper that has been put to its intended use and has been recovered from the waste stream and recycle to make new paper. Pre-Consumer Waste: Recycled from waste at the paper mill or printer. It is content recovered from waste that has never reached the consumer. Rainforest Alliance: Works with the FSC to help companies incorporate sustainability into their sourcing strategies. Recycled paper: Made with a variety of different percentages of recycled paper fibers, ranging from 10% to 100%, with recycled content falling into two different categories: Pre-Consumer and Post-Consumer recycled fiber. Sustainability: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative): A forest management program that balances the demand for wood products with the need for forest sustainability. TCF (Totally Chlorine Free): Designated for virgin fiber papers, the TCF label indicates that no chlorine or chlorine compounds were used in the pulping process. Tree Free: Papers made from plant fibers such as kenaf, hemp, flax and cotton. TRF (Totally Recycled Fiber): Paper made from 100% recycled material and may contain pre- and post-consumer content. Virgin Fiber: Paper made without any recycled or alternative fibers.
